Stick Art

I took this photo at the Honolulu Academy of Arts during their exhibition of the Stick Art Show. So primitive yet fascinating to look at. I actually took several photos with my son Alex on it. It’s quite an experience for him.
The sticks evokes childhood memories growing up in a rural area in the Philippines. We make use of sticks like rattan or bamboo wicker as furniture. The baskets for collecting mangoes and other fruits are made of bamboo sticks same for the trugs use in harvesting vegetables in the farm. The baskets were the norm before plastic bags. My mother use a basket whenever she goes to the market to buy vegetables and fish. I wish people go back to those days so we don’t have this problem of plastics piling up in our landfills.
