Suha/Pomelo

Suha – Pomelo (Citrus Maxima) also called shaddock, is a citrus fruit that looks like a big grapefruit and is native to Southeast Asia. Pomelo or suha as we call it in the Philippines is a big citrus fruit and has a thick skin green on the outside but white inside and tastes bitter and it’s inedible. The rind feels fluffy when you open a pomelo.  Pomelo came from a Dutch word “pompelmoes” meaning citrus maxima. In Hawaii they call it “Jabong”.

We normally eat the suha with salt.  Some varieties can be sour and some are sweet. The flesh of a pomelo or suha is just like other citrus fruit that comes in segments and some segments would have seeds inside and can be planted to produce another tree. The tree can grow up to 30 ft. tall and has green leaves that has a very nice citrusy scent. The flowers are white and is very fragrant. I remember bees hover around the tree when it’s in full bloom.

And like any other fruits out there, suha or pomelo is full of nutritional value. It’s rich in Vitamin C and B vitamins. It also contains minerals like potassium as the highest per mg, phosphorous, magnesium and traces of zinc and iron.

It is a summer fruit in the Philippines and makes a refreshing juice if you blend it with a little mint and ice.  My sweetener would be agave syrup if its available in your area.
